The two Archdeacons serve the church within the Diocese by taking particular responsibility for buildings, including church buildings, the welfare of clergy and their families and the implementation of diocesan policy for the sake of the Gospel within an archdeaconry.
Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham
Malcolm has been the Archdeacon of Sheffield & Rotherham since January 2014 and a member of General Synod since 2015. In 2016 Malcolm was elected by the General Synod to serve on the Mission and Public Affairs Council of the national Church, and was re-elected in 2022.
He was ordained in 1996 and served his curacy in Walsall in the Diocese of Lichfield, an urban parish with significant deprivation. He moved to Liverpool in 1999 to be Associate Anglican Chaplain to the University of Liverpool and also curate of St Matthew and St James, Mossley Hill, a large suburban church where he led the planting of a new missional student congregation. In 2002, Malcolm was appointed Anglican Chaplain to the University of Liverpool (half time) and also the Liverpool Diocesan Emerging Church Consultant working as part of the Church Growth and Ecumenism Team. In 2008 he was appointed Rector of St Mary’s Wavertree, another urban parish in an area of multiple deprivation, along with holding Deanery responsibility for Pioneer Ministry and Fresh Expressions of Church. He was made Area Dean of Toxteth & Wavertree in 2012.
Malcolm holds a degree in Economics and Education from York University, a BTh in Theology and Ministry from the University of Oxford and an M Phil in Pastoral Theology from Liverpool Hope University. He trained for the ministry at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford. Malcolm has a long term interest and connection with the Church in Pakistan, having served as a mission partner in Peshawar, and is actively committed to all five marks of mission, frequently contributing to events and groups focussed on issues of justice, inclusion and environment concern.
Malcolm is married to Jo and they have two adult children both studying for degrees at university. He is also an avid supporter of Leicester City!
Archdeacon of Doncaster
On Saturday, 16 May, the Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield, licensed the Revd Canon Javaid Iqbal as the Acting Archdeacon of Doncaster and licensed him as the Archdeacon of Doncaster on 23 September 2020.
Javaid was born and brought up in Pakistan. He is married to Mussarat and has four grown up children who have flown the nest. After training in Pakistan and England, he was ordained in the Church of Pakistan in 1997. Before becoming Archdeacon, Javaid served in five parishes, two in Pakistan and three in England, and set up a Diocesan department for mission and evangelism.
Javaid has served in three different dioceses in multifarious contexts. He went to St Thomas Theological College in Karachi in 1992. After having trained for two years there in 1994, he attended St. John’s College Nottingham, completing another three years of training. He served in the Diocese of Leicester for 13 years and was made an Honorary Canon of Leicester Cathedral. Form 2013 to 2020, Javaid served in the Diocesan of St Alban’s. He has been involved in various aspects of ministry as Chair of the Diocesan House of Clergy, vocation advisor, BAME vocation champion, reaching new people learning community, and interfaith and intercultural ministry to diverse communities. Javaid is passionate about evangelism, diversity, equality and wellbeing.
