Church of England and its role in post-war historical adoption practices
On 18 June 2026, the Church of England apologised for its in role in post-war historical adoption practices. Read the apology in full on the national website.
We recognise this apology and the harm caused to many mothers, children and families.
We acknowledge the deep pain, trauma and stigma experienced by those affected, and we are profoundly sorry.
We are also aware that this history has local connections within our diocese, particularly through the St Agatha’s mother and baby home that operated in Sheffield until 1973. We know this may be particularly difficult for those with lived experience locally.
Our priority is to listen with care, respond with compassion, and ensure that anyone affected is able to access appropriate support.
If you have been affected, there are multiple support options available. This includes specialist adoption support services, confidential support through the Safe Spaces, and the diocesan safeguarding team. These details are listed below.
