Safeguarding Leadership
Leadership courses for 2025 will need to be booked on the National Safeguarding Training Portal. https://safeguardingtraining.cofeportal.org/ Please choose Leadership, followed by Diocese of Sheffield to enrol for the course. Once we accept your enrolment, you will be able to choose either a zoom or an in person course and choose your preferred date. You will need a National Safeguarding Team Portal account. If you do not have an account, you will need to set one up by choosing the ‘create a new account’ tab and following the instructions. When asked for details of your church please give the FULL address of your church including postcode.
Basic and Foundations Safeguarding Training must have been completed in the last 3 years before you can complete this pathway.
Please note that participants need to complete some pre work on the portal prior to the training. This takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete.
A message of encouragement:
We understand that the pre work may seem a little daunting at first glance, but please rest assured, the tasks are straightforward and manageable. Many participants find that once they start, it is much easier than expected!
If you have any questions or need support please contact Claire Sayce – training.safeguarding@sheffield.anglican.org or 07392090410
In the event of cancellation of a leadership course, participants will be notified by e mail only as phone numbers are not collected on the portal in compliance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). It is advisable to check your email in the hours leading up to the course.

Permission to Officiate (PtO) Pathway
This course is delivered face-to-face.
Basic and Foundations Safeguarding Training must have been completed in the last 3 years before you can complete this pathway.
Please note, this version of the leadership training is for those with Permission to Officiate who lead the occasional service ( e.g. less then 5 times per year). Those with a more substantial role within the Parish should complete the full Safeguarding Leadership course.
Please note from January 2026 we are looking at ways in which the PTO Leadership Training can be provided for those clergy who wish to retain or renew their Permission to Officiate (PTO) in the Diocese. We are looking at ways in which this can be delivered in an accessible manner and by expelling a few myths about the perceived difficulties that might be encountered. We are looking at:
- running small-group courses at a local level for those who cannot travel to distant parts;
- making the paper-based system available for those with limited access to computers;
- having an experienced ‘buddy’ on hand to help navigate the course.
Please contact Revd Dr Richard Walton, Bishop’s Chaplain for Retired Clergy and their Spouses on 0114 275 3434 or e mail Richard.Walton@sheffield-cathedral.org.uk or Claire Sayce – Safeguarding Training Officer on 07392090410 or email Training.Safeguarding@sheffield.anglican.org to discuss availability.
