Sheffield Pilgrims Share Fellowship at Cursillo Weekend

An annual event which encourages prayer, study and action has seen pilgrims across the Diocese of Sheffield engage in fellowship and connection.

Taking place at Cliff College from 08 to 10 May, this year’s Cursillo weekend – Sheffield Cursillo 18, had 11 pilgrims taking part. ‘Cursillo’ is a movement of the Church providing a method by which Christians are empowered to grow through prayer, study and action and enabled to share God’s love with everyone.

The weekend was led by this year’s  ‘Lay Rector’ Beth Henshaw, supported by Spiritual Directors Revd Ali Dorey, Revd Chris Herbert, and Revd Kath Lonsborough, alongside a committed lay team of ten experienced Cursillistas (people who have previously been on a Cursillo weekend).

Over the weekend, the pilgrims heard 15 talks, shared in the daily Eucharist, and enjoyed fellowship and shared meals. At the heart of Cursillo is the invitation to explore discipleship through the rhythm of “Prayer, Study, and Action.” In the opening talk, Beth invited pilgrims simply to “Come as you are,” setting the tone for a weekend rooted in welcome, honesty, and grace. A key strength of Cursillo is the opportunity to meet and share stories with people from different backgrounds and church contexts. Throughout the weekend, those initially arriving as individuals gradually formed a shared community, shaped by conversation, worship, and the work of the Holy Spirit. This is an inclusive community where all are welcome, and where diversity of experience and perspective becomes a gift that enriches shared faith.

One pilgrim reflected, “Great weekend, wonderful fellowship,” capturing something of the spirit of warmth, connection, and encouragement that marked the time together. Another added, “Fantastic weekend – only problem was that it was about seven days too short,” highlighting the sense of joy and depth of fellowship there.

By the end of the three days, pilgrims left not only with renewed faith and insight but also with a deepened sense of belonging, connection with each other, with God, and with the world, alongside a renewed inspiration to live out their calling where they are.
