Do you ever think of autumn as the beginning of something? It’s counter intuitive to those of us who have been out of school for a few years but for children and young people across the diocese, the autumn term marks the beginning of a new school year and a fresh start.
I remember when I was at secondary school, being so excited for September and armed with a new bag, a new pencil case and a new lip gloss (it was the 2000s) – oh the possibilities! Many of the children in our schools will be excited to see their friends and learn new things. Many will benefit from the structure and routine after an unstructured summer. Some will be coming back to their safe place and some may be nervous about exams or the other children in their class. They come as they are and it is our job as the Church to meet them where they are, in their excitement, trepidation, uncertainty and ambition.
Do not despise these small beginnings, for the Lord rejoices to see the work begin, to see the plumb line in Zerubbabel’s hand. – Zechariah 4:10
During autumn, it’s hard not to notice the trees: dressed in red, orange and gold before they shed for winter. It’s such a beautiful sight because it doesn’t last long. You’ve got catch it while you can! This time of year is in many ways as golden as the leaves. The children are rested from their summer holidays, expectant of new things but are not yet caught up in the Christmas rush, or later, the exam stress. Now, right now, could be a golden window of opportunity for you and your church to engage with your local school.
What new thing could you start? What safe space could you provide? What golden opportunity might God be creating for you? Like the trees shed their leaves ready to start again, is there something you must shed, to make room for something new?
