First Multilingual Authorisation Service for Focal Ministers

St James’ Church, Doncaster, has celebrated the authorisation of two new Focal Ministers, marking a step forward in its mission and growth. Focal Ministers are called to proclaim the Gospel in word and deed, serving as visible reminders of God’s love within their congregations and communities.

Mussarat Iqbal, who also serves as Churchwarden, and Zarish Nadeem were nominated by the PCC and prepared for this ministry by the Diocese. They will now serve for three years as leaders within their parish, offering pastoral care, encouragement, and a focal point for discipleship and service.

The service featured Bible readings from 1 Timothy 6: 6-19 and Luke 16: 19-31. During the commissioning, Lead Lay Ministry Enabler Beth Burras asked Zarish and Mussarat the following questions:

‘Do you believe that God is calling you to this ministry?’

‘Will you be faithful in leading the people of God placed under your care?’

‘Will you be diligent in prayer, in reading Holy Scripture, and in all studies that will deepen your faith and fit you to bear witness to the truth of the gospel?’

‘Will you endeavour to fashion your life according to the way of Christ?’

‘Will you promote unity, peace and love in the Church and in the world, and especially among those whom you serve?’

‘Will you work closely with your colleagues in ministry and encourage the gifts of others?’

After the commissioning, the congregation affirmed the creed and took part in Holy Communion, before the service was closed with a blessing. St James is a richly diverse church, committed to intercultural mission and inclusion. Through this ministry, the parish seeks to build stronger community ties, celebrate cultural diversity, and share the Good News in Doncaster. The Diocese gives thanks for Mussarat and Zarish and prays for God’s blessing on their ministry.

“I am so glad to be authorised again as a Focal minister to a new congregation/ St James Urdu Congregation this time. The most heartfelt and moving moment during the Authorization service was assisting the Sacrament of Holy communion and receiving my Certificate. It was a joyous celebration of our Authorisation as a Focal minister. Blessings” – Zarish Nadeem

“It was a joyful service of authorisation, where it was great to recognise the focal leadership of Zarish and Mussarat at St James’. The morning and afternoon congregations there will both benefit from the wisdom and care of these two much-loved Focal Ministers.” – Beth Burras
