Bishop Pete and Cathy are delighted to be hosting the Biennial Garden Party at Bishopscroft this year, raising funds in support of three local charities: The Archer Project (supporting people experiencing homelessness, based at Sheffield Cathedral), ASSIST (an asylum seeker and refugee charity in Sheffield, of which Bishop Pete is a Patron), and Refurnish in Doncaster (providing community benefit in South Yorkshire). Monies raised will be divided equally between them.
There will be a wonderful variety of stalls, music, refreshments, children’s activities, a silent auction and raffle. Everyone is welcome – do feel free to circulate details more widely within your networks!
If you would like to get involved as a volunteer on the day contact Dominique Horsfield by email on dominique@bishopofdoncaster.org.uk.

Pupils from the Diocese of Sheffield Academy Trust primary schools have been invited to take part in a special creative competition themed around upcycling and recycling. Each school has been asked to submit two items crafted by their pupils from reused or recycled materials – decorative, practical, or artistic, anything goes! All entries will be on display around the garden for visitors to enjoy, with three winning entries announced during the afternoon.
We are pleased to welcome a number of stall holders, including many selling upcycled goods created from items that might otherwise have gone to landfill.
Afternoon tea will be served in style on the forecourt at Bishopscroft by members of St John’s Ranmoor. Hot food will also be available from street food vendor Fancy Fries of Yorkshire.
The Archer Project has a proven history of transforming the lives of vulnerable people experiencing homelessness in Sheffield and the wider region. What began 30 years ago as a breakfast served by the congregation at Sheffield Cathedral has grown into a multifaceted range of services to support individuals who need it the most. Escaping homelessness is not just about getting off the street – to break the cycle, individuals must receive support at every stage back into paid employment. In 2023, The Archer Project supported 1,103 individuals on their journey out of homelessness.
ASSIST works alongside people in Sheffield who have been refused asylum in the UK. People in this situation do not have the right to work, housing, benefits or other vital forms of support, and typically find themselves pushed into destitution and homelessness. ASSIST works with them to remove these barriers, providing accommodation, welfare payments, bus passes and a bespoke casework service, through which clients are referred to vital legal advice and signposted to opportunities to build community links and improve their wellbeing. The work of ASSIST is possible thanks to the generosity of its volunteers and supporters.
Doncaster Refurnish is a small charitable organisation that provides community benefit in South Yorkshire, using the medium of recycling furniture and household goods to train and develop people. They promote the ethos of recycling and environmentally sustainable living by collecting and restoring furniture to sell at affordable prices, preventing hundreds of tonnes of functional items from going to landfill every year. They also provide furniture, household goods, food parcels, medicine delivery and handyman services in times of crisis. Refurnish also works in partnership with HMP Hatfield on projects with prisoners, helping them learn key skills to aid rehabilitation and resettlement.
