The retrial of Chris Brain begins at Inner London Crown Court on 3 September 2026. The retrial concerns five charges on which the jury was previously unable to reach verdicts.
This will be a further painful time for many victims and survivors, former members of the Nine O’ Clock Service, their families, and all those affected by Mr Brain’s actions all those years ago. We recognise that these proceedings may renew memories of abuse and cause significant distress for many people.
The Rt Revd Dr Pete Wilcox, Bishop of Sheffield, has issued the following statement
“As court proceedings begin once again, my thoughts and prayers are once more with all victims and survivors, and everyone affected by this case. I recognise that revisiting historic experiences may renew feelings of hurt and trauma for many people. We remain committed to listening well, supporting those who come forward, and continuing the work of ensuring our churches are places where people are safe, valued and heard.”
The Diocese remains committed to the highest standards of safeguarding and to learning from the past. Following the conclusion of the criminal proceedings, the Diocese intends to begin an independent Safeguarding Practice Review commissioned by Bishop Pete in September 2025. This will examine the Church’s response, to help us better understand what happened and identify any further learning to strengthen safeguarding across the Diocese.

Thirtyone:eight has been commissioned to provide a specialist helpline, offering a confidential, supportive listening ear and signposting to appropriate support, alongside a more in-depth Listening Service for eligible victims, survivors and those supporting them. Safe Spaces also provides free and confidential independent support for adults affected by church-based abuse, including emotional support, advocacy and help in understanding and meeting individual needs.
