Porter Croft School Earns Global Citizenship Award

Porter Croft CE Primary Academy in Sheffield is celebrating being awarded the Bronze Global Neighbours Award by Christian Aid. The award recognises the school’s outstanding work in helping children understand global injustice and their Christian responsibility to help create a fairer world.

This achievement has been a true team effort, involving pupils, staff, parents, and governors. From eco projects to pupil-led advocacy, the whole school community has played a part. Lead Governor Heather Waller has overseen the work, supporting the school’s strategic approach and ensuring it stayed rooted in its core values.

The school’s dynamic approach—from recycling campaigns and eco‑warrior initiatives to pupil‑driven policy reviews and a curriculum emphasizing diversity and sustainability—demonstrates what Global Neighbours means in practice.

Sarah Holman (Deputy Headteacher), who coordinated the school’s work towards the award, said: ‘This has really shifted how our children see the world. They’re more aware of global issues and more confident that they can do something about them. The award is a proud moment for us — and just the beginning.’

Porter Croft encourages other schools to explore the Global Neighbours scheme, which is open to both primary and secondary schools. It’s a meaningful way to grow global citizens and courageous advocates for change.

Achieving Bronze is a proud milestone, but not the finish line. ‘We’re delighted… and it energises us to aim even higher,‘ says Cath Thomas, Headteacher, as the school sets sights on Silver and Gold levels. With continued pupil empowerment, parent involvement, and courageous advocacy, Porter Croft is on course to deepen its impact as a community of koinonia—and a model of active global citizenship.
