New mindful music sessions will be taking place in Sheffield, mixing secular and religious songs, as part of support for those living with dementia. Taking place at St Matthew’s Carver Street, the monthly sessions will be one of the initiatives run by the Parish Nursing Project.
“The power of music, especially singing, to unlock memories, is an increasingly key feature of dementia care as it seems to access parts of the brain that remain unaffected by the progression of dementia” says Catherine, one of the nurses who will be leading the sessions.
‘Mindful Music’ uses a mixture of secular and religious songs which span the decades. Every song within the songbook is carefully chosen, with some being introduced by a relevant Bible verse and concluded with a prayer. The sessions are designed to encourage communication, recollection of memories, give opportunity to connect with faith, and be fun for those taking part. It is also hoped carers will find the sessions beneficial through enabling time for them to relax, make friends and share experiences, and reduce social isolation.
As these sessions are run as part of the Parish Nursing Project, there will also be opportunity for health advice and information as necessary on a 1 to 1 basis, from a Registered Nurse. Sessions will take place Monthly on Wednesday afternoons, with the next session being on the 11th June at 2pm at St Matthew’s.
