Diocese of Sheffield Supports Poster Campaign for Christmas

The Rt Revd Arun Arora, co-lead Bishop for Racial Justice for the Church of England and Bishop of Kirkstall, has launched a poster campaign sharing messages of hope and welcome to all this Christmas.

The posters can be shown anywhere, but are designed to be seen at bus stops, telling people the good news of Jesus’ birth and the love he brought into the world for all.

This resource is also being made available in the Diocese of Sheffield, and is supported by our Racial Justice team.

Revd Anesia Cook, Racial Justice Officer for the Diocese of Sheffield, said:

These posters remind us of the true meaning of the Incarnation, that God became flesh and entered our world as a vulnerable baby. Taking on flesh and entering a world composed of violence, now and then, is a radical act of becoming one with the underside of history, Christmas is the beginning of the Jesus story which invites us to reconsider God’s love for us and for each other.  Christmas invites us too to “Love our neighbours as ourselves”, we are called to treat others with the same care and respect we desire for ourselves, reflecting God’s love and goodwill to all people, regardless of their place birth or the colour of their skin, during this Christmas season and beyond.’

Bishop Arun said: ‘We must confront and resist the capture of Christian language and symbols by populist forces seeking to exploit the faith for their own political ends.

‘Whether in the warnings of the prophets or the teaching of Jesus, there is an unambiguous call to ensure justice for the weakest and most vulnerable.

‘As we approach Christmas and recall the Holy Family’s own flight as refugees, we reaffirm our commitment to stand alongside others in working for an asylum system that is fair, compassionate, and rooted in the dignity of being human.’

The posters are part of a wider ecumenical response and are supported by the Joint Public Issues Team, a partnership between the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Methodist church and the United Reformed church.

The posters, which can be printed and put up by anyone including churches, can be found here.
