Delighted students become first to graduate on youth & children’s ministry course

26th June 2014

On 25 June 2014, 20 people attended Cliff College to mark their graduation on the Aurora course.  13 Children’s students and seven Youth student’s received their certificates for the newly designed learning programme.  The accreditation awarded is the Cliff College Certificate in Children’s or Youth Ministry. All graduates also receive the Bishop’s Certificate at the Lay Ministry Service in September 2014.

Aurora Youth and Aurora Children are 10-month ecumenical courses for anyone over 16-years-old seeking practical, hands-on training with a creative approach to assessment through portfolio submissions. It is operated jointly by the Diocese of Sheffield and the YMCA, in partnership with Cliff College and the Methodist Church.

In addition, several other candidates passed at a lower level; these will also receive the Bishop’s Certificate in September.
This is the first year of students to go through the new Aurora Youth course.  The Children’s course has been running for a number of years under a different name.
The Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Dr Steven Croft attended the ceremony, congratulating the students as they came forward to receive their certificates.
Hundreds of other students who have studied with Cliff College also graduated at the event.  There were those from certificate courses like Aurora, along with others completing Masters and PhD qualifications.
The day started with worship in a large marquee, with a short talk led by Revd Dr Chris Blake (Principle of Cliff College.)  After lunch, students and faculty re-filled the marquee to begin the ceremony.
Mike North, Director of Youth and Children’s Ministries at the Diocese of Sheffield was one of the proud tutors watching the Aurora Students.
He said:
“This is a wonderful way to celebrate the end of an important year for our students.  We’ve all learnt so much from each other and students continue to minister in their local churches with more confidence and understanding than they had a year ago.  It’s great to get the first year of Aurora Youth under our belts, and the course is set to start again in a few months at the end of September.”
