Archbishop of York lends his support to development course for youth ministry

31st July 2014

Aurora is an ecumenical training course for volunteer youth workers in local Churches, run in partnership between YMCA White Rose, the Diocese of Sheffield and Cliff College.

There is also a Children’s Ministry Course which runs alongside it for volunteer Children’s courses.

The Archbishop said:

“I am delighted that my Youth Trust awarded a grant to the YMCA White Rose in 2012 to build a website in support of the Aurora Youth and Children’s Ministry Courses. ‘When presented with a group of children, Jesus told his disciples to let them come to him and not to hinder them’. (Luke 18: 16). In the Church we sometimes need to re-learn how to enable our young people to meet with Jesus and not to get in their way!

The Aurora Courses offer practical training for volunteer youth and children’s workers based at local churches using the website as a training tool. If you want to be a part of this amazing ministry of helping young people and children wanting to meet with Jesus, Aurora offers a great base to pick up the skills and knowledge to grow in ministry. Go for it!”

>The Aurora courses are set to launch again in September. The courses are delivered from Church House in Rotherham across eight monthly training sessions, plus three full-day Saturdays.

Students learn the basics of good practice and safeguarding, alongside the essentials for developing faith and spirituality in young people and children. The courses are excellent for those churches serious in growing and nurturing their under 18s.

Students on last year’s Aurora Youth course found it highly engaging and relevant saying "I’ve got something out of every session”; “I have thought a lot more about how to meet the needs of my young people”; and “the course has given me so much confidence”.

Those on the Aurora Children’s course also had the same experiences with one student saying: "[Aurora gave] me the knowledge, understanding and most of all belief in myself to pursue anything, I have now landed my dream job!”.
