Maundy Lecture takes place at Sheffield Cathedral
17th March 2015
In the warm up to Royal Maunday at Sheffield Cathedral, the Lord High Almoner, Bishop of Worcester, the Rt Revd Dr John Inge delivered the Maundy Lecture on the morning of 14 March.
The Cathedral was filled with the those recipients that have been invited to receive the gift of Maundy Money from Her Majesty the Queen on 2 April 2015. The recipients and their close friends and family heard the history of the Maundy from Bishop John. The tradition can be traced back as far as the sixth century, though it wasn't always carried out on Maundy Thursday.
All the recipients have been nominated by clergy in the diocese for the service they have given to their church and community over many years. The Queen, as a lifelong Christian and the Supreme Governer of the Church of England, honours this service by presenting a set of coins, specially struck in sterling silver for the occasion.
The gathered crowd heard stories from the Royal Maundy over the years, and also found out more about what to expect on the day itself. The Revd Canon Keith Farrow, Canon Missioner at the Cathedral was meeting and greeting people and their to talk about the day...
