Former Sheffield Director of Ministry consecrated as Bishop of Selby

Archbishop Sentamu has consecrated two new Bishops of the Diocese of York at York Minster today, Thursday 3rd July. The Ven Paul John Ferguson, Archdeacon of Cleveland, is now the Suffragan Bishop of Whitby, and the Rev Canon Dr John Bromilow Thomson, who was the Director of Ministry in the Diocese of Sheffield, has been consecrated as the Suffragan Bishop of Selby.
The Revd Sue Bond, Rector of Ampleforth, gave the sermon at the service. Sue was John Thomson’s Rector when he lived in Warmsworth, and is now a colleague of Paul Ferguson in the Archdeaconry of Cleveland. During the sermon, Sue paid tribute to the new Bishops' intelligence and humble nature also speaking of the challenges that will lay ahead for them.
John Thomson was presented for consecration by the Bishop of Sheffield, the Rt Revd Steven Croft, and the Rt Revd Richard Frith, Bishop of Hull. Paul Ferguson wias presented for consecration by the Rt Revd Glyn Webster, Bishop of Beverley, and the Rt Revd David Hamid, Assistant Bishop of Europe, who works with Paul on the Porvoo Communion Committee.
Just before the congregations was dismissed, Archbishop Sentamu gave the newly ordained Bishops a pastoral staff each urging them to "keep watch over the whole flock, in which the Holy Spirit has appointed you shepherd".
The new Bishops then stood by the doors of the Minster to meet and greet family, friends and well wishers that had travelled to the service.
