Honorary Canons photographed with Bishops and DeanOn Sunday, 12 October the Bishop of Sheffield licensed three new honorary Canons of Sheffield Cathedral, in recognition of their service in the diocese.

Also in attendance at the service were the Bishop of Doncaster, Peter Burrows and the Dean of Sheffield, Peter Bradley, each also marking the significant occasion.

Each canon has their own ‘stall’ or seat in the cathedral which they take up for special services.  They also become part of the greater Chapter – working with the Dean and Residentiary Canons to ensure the smooth running of the Cathedral.

The appointments are as follows:

  • The Revd Canon Mary Gregory - Rector at Church of the Good Shepherd, Kirk Sandall & Edenthorpe; Dean of Women’s Ministry; Diocesan Synod Representative; and member of Bishop’s Staff.
  • The Revd Canon Julie Upton - Team Rector at Sheffield Manor.
  • Canon Peter Rainford - Reader and Worship Leader at St John, Kimberworth Park; member of Bishop’s Council; and Diocesan Synod Lay Representative.

The newly-licensed Revd Canon Mary Gregory also preached at the service.  She will now take up the new role with immediate effect alongside Julie and Peter.
