RSCM Diocesan Choral Festival

On Saturday 7th March, choir members from across the area joined together with the Cathedral Choir for the RSCM Diocesan Choral Festival in Sheffield Cathedral. The Choir of over 80 singers included a good number of young choristers.

The day was directed by Neil Taylor, Master of Music at Sheffield Cathedral, assisted by Robert Webb, Director of Music at St John’s, Ranmoor, who led one of the morning sectional rehearsals, and Anthony Gowing, the Assistant Master of Music, played the organ.

After four hours of rehearsals, the day concluded with a Sung Eucharist using Noel Rawsthorne’s Festive Eucharist setting. This special service also included the Mawby motet, ‘Ave Verum’ during communion and concluded with a dynamic rendering of Stanford’s setting of the Te Deum in Bb.

The celebrant at this service was Canon Dr Paul Shackerley. The preacher was the Dean, the Very Reverend Peter Bradley, who gave a thought-provoking and memorable sermon, linking the challenges of sight-reading music with the blessings of Deuteronomy 26, one of the set readings for the day. If you would like a copy of this sermon, it is available from Helen Bent (01709 – 363850).

RSCM Come and Sing Psalms

On Tuesday 27th January, over 50 choir members from across the area joined together at Aston Church of England Primary School to sing Psalms.

The Lectionary allocates Psalms for each service, but many churches are struggling to find suitable settings for a 21st Century Church. This was an evening to explore the repertoire as well as learn something of the biblical background and poetry of the Psalms. What do we lose as congregations if we don’t balance psalms of praise with psalms of lament. And indeed, how do we lament in a predominantly praising Church?

The evening was directed by Revd Helen Bent, Bishop’s Adviser in Music and Worship, Robert Webb, RSCM Sheffield & S. Yorks Education and Training Officer and Director of Music at St. John’s Ranmoor, Sheffield, Sarah Colver, Choir Director at Holy Trinity, Millhouses, and Paul Hudson, Choir Director at All Saints Aston.
