Heritage Lottery Fund – launch of new grant programme for places of worship

On 14th December, HLF launched its new grant programmes for places of worship In England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Island. As previously, the priority remains
structural repairs urgently required within the next two years that have been clearly identified and defined in a condition survey such as a Quinquennial Inspection.

T
his new programme is also designed to encourage more people and a wider range of people to take an interest in their local places of worship and to help care for them in the future. They hope to achieve this by finding new ways in which places of worship can be used by the wider community beyond the primary function of worship and/or by providing new opportunities for people to find out about the heritage of places of worship.

They will also fund new capital works, such as toilets or kitchens, improvements to heating or electrical systems, other works to improve energy efficiency, and works to assist with the on-going maintenance of the place of worship.

Decisions are made four times a year by local Committees.
The first deadlines for submission are at the end of February 2013 for the first Committee meeting being held in June.

Remember that a
ll HLF main funding streams are open to places of worship and through which the HLF consider grant applications for a wide range of heritage projects, activities and events, including:

  • work to protect and hand on what people value most, such as conservation work for organs, bells, clocks, paintings, stained glass, textiles and monuments;

  • projects which help people to learn about heritage, such as creating a guide book or exhibition inside the church or digital projects to create online videos and websites;

  • projects that help people to be more involved with the heritage of their churches.

Notes for Guidance

1. AIM OF THE TRUST

“The principle aim of the trustees is to initiate projects which enable the church to be more socially responsible.”  Please consider carefully whether we are the most appropriate Trust to apply to, in order to meet your needs.

Specifically excluded from our consideration are grants in support of political parties, funding of individuals, support of major appeals and on-going funding of salaries and church fabric appeals.

Because of the limited funds available, Trustees have decided to prioritise applications from high need areas.

WHIRLOW BURSARY FUND FOR PARISHES

Last Updated on Thursday, 17 February 2011 10:01

WHIRLOW BURSARY FUND

From the beginning of 1988 the Whirlow Management Committee as it then was has been instructed to fix charges on a commercial basis – i.e. so that income covers expenditure.

In 2004 Whirlow became a limited company financially independent of the diocese of Sheffield.

Whirlow continues to offer a concessionary rate for Church and Church-Related Charitable groups and this rate will have been offered to parishes and individuals attending events organised by Whirlow staff.

The Diocese recognises, however, that the cost of accommodation, etc at Whirlow may be beyond the means of individuals and families in parishes.
