HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is moving to an on-line system (Charities Online) for the submission of Gift Aid claims. Although there will continue to be a paper form option, the objective within HMRC is to encourage all charities to submit claims on-line. For further information please read the latest guidance.

Tax effective giving

Gift Aid

Gift Aid allows the Church to claim back the tax on gifts by UK taxpayers. Income and capital gains tax paid for the year must be at least equal to the tax to be reclaimed.  This increases a gift by 25p for every £1 given.  The system is easy to set up and operate and one declaration can apply to all donations that a donor makes.  More information, including guidelines on the changes being introduced in 2013 are available on the parish resources website.

If you are a higher rate taxpayer, more information about how this affects Gift Aid can be found on the HMRC website.

Gift Aid forms for regular or one-off donations can be downloaded below and customised for your own church by replacing the text in orange with information specific to your church.

Gift Aid Envelopes

Many parishes have found it helpful to have envelopes for occasional visitors to use, and for use at occasional services such as baptisms, weddings, and funerals. These encourage a realistic level of Giving and enable this to be done through the Gift Aid Scheme.

Some simple designs are available to download below and can be customised for your church by replacing the highlighted text with information specific to your church.

Also available to download is a template for printing labels (4 to a sheet) which can be stuck onto envelopes (A6 size).  These can again be customised by replacing the highlighted text with information specific to your church.

Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is a flexible scheme that enables you to make charitable donations straight from your gross salary. This means that you get immediate tax relief on the value of your donation. For a basic rate taxpayer wanting to give a £10 donation, it will only cost £7.80, or just £6 for higher rate taxpayers.

For example:

  • Pledge: £10
  • Value to charity: £10
  • Cost to you (paying 20% tax): £8
  • Cost to you (paying 40% tax): £6

Charities Together South Yorkshire

A new consortium of local charities all with very strong links to the Diocese needs your help through payroll giving:

  • 'Here for You' works with adults and their children going through divorce or relationship breakdown.
  • Together for Regeneration works ecumenically to help communities put together action plans for sustainable local regeneration.
  • Industrial Mission South Yorkshire, again ecumenical, has Chaplains working in organisations like South Yorkshire Police, major industry and large stores across South Yorkshire.
  • Church in Action helps parishes engage with local communities, provides backroom but necessary administration services like accounting and payroll for other small charities, makes general grants to churches, funds initiatives like Major Incident Plan to ensure swift response in case of major attack or disaster in the area, and much much more

Together these four charities make up the consortium “Charities Together South Yorkshire”. Your payroll donations will be shared equally amongst all four charities.

How does it work?

Very easily – download the pdf leaflet and fill in and return one copy to your employer’s or pension provider’s payroll section, send a second copy to The Finance Office, Church House 95-99 Effingham Street, Rotherham S65 1BL and that’s it. Payments are deducted straight from your salary before tax; all you need to do is choose how much you want to give. The money goes via a Payroll Giving agency (who charges a small administrative fee) to the designated charity or charities, in this case “Charities Together South Yorkshire”. If your employer does not currently offer this we can help them set it up.

Please make a small gift, it could make a big difference to some one’s life.
