Report of Diocesan Synod - March 2011

Bishops, laity and clergy attended the Diocesan Synod in Rotherham on Saturday (26 March) with growing the Church of England across South Yorkshire topping the agenda.
The Bishop of Sheffield’s Report, Growing the Body of Christ resulted in careful consideration of the future as the Diocese looks at methods of growth and the sustaining of Christian communities over the next decade.
The Synod, chaired by Canon Elizabeth Paver, was in a fairly animated mood as other topics, such as an update on Diocesan finances and consideration of the Anglican Communion Covenant were also aired during the morning’s proceedings.
But it was the Bishop of Sheffield’s future strategy that left an air of excitement in the Elim Christian Centre early on Saturday morning, being fully embraced by other Synod members as the Diocese looks to make big progress over the next ten years.
The Bishop, Dr Steven Croft, said: “If we can expand the Christian community by 20 per cent across the Diocese over the next ten years this seems reasonable in the light of our story over the last 50 years.
He added: “It’s important to remember also, that 20 per cent is not necessarily a mission target, but a what if question. It is important to not become obsessed with statistics and figures, but also aim to develop the relationships with those already embedded within our community.”
Following Dr Croft’s presentation of The Report feedback was offered to the floor. The Revd Kevin Barnard, Vicar of St Mary’s, Bolsterstone, responded: “I’m very excited about the prospects of this Report and welcome its foundations and principles.”
The Bishop of Doncaster, Cyril Ashton, also welcomed The Report: “It is one of the most well thought out processes I’ve ever encountered.”
The Synod moved on to tackling further issues as Chairman, Elizabeth Paver, stressed her belief that it is important to support the Anglican Communion Covenant, stating: “This family is worth holding on to.”
Revd Jeffrey Stokoe, Priest in charge of St Hugh’s, Doncaster, updated Synod members on recent proceedings at the General Synod at the Church of England Synod in London before the Synod ended with a vote of thanks and appreciation for the Bishop of Doncaster, Cyril Ashton, who was attending his last Synod as Bishop before his retirement this summer.
The Diocese of Sheffield is called to grow a sustainable network of Christ-like, lively and diverse Christian communities in every place which are effective in making disciples and in seeking to transform our society and God’s world.
Diocesan Synod - September 2010

Each diocese has its own Diocesan Synod which consists of the bishops and elected laity and clergy from each deanery. The Diocesan Synod considers matters sent to it from General Synod and from deanery synods, formulates diocesan policy on a wide range of issues, advises the bishop as appropriate and votes the funding of stipends and administration to be raised from the parishes. It is asked to approve the annual budget of the diocese, and considers the annual accounts of the Diocesan Board of Finance.
Deaneries and Parishes can bring any question of general Church interest or raise a matter affecting the deanery or any parish within the deanery to the Diocesan Synod, by passing a motion at Deanery Synod. The Deanery Synod Chairman or Secretary forwards the motion to the Diocesan Secretary, after which the motion is proposed at Diocesan Synod by a member from the Deanery.
The Diocesan Synod can pass Motions which are sent for debate at General Synod. Such Motions are usually dealt with in order of date received, and may take some time to be considered for debate.
