Sheffield Diocesan Counselling Service for clergy and their families
To seek help at times of personal crisis and stress is a sign of strength not weakness.
For some people, skilled and professional help at an early stage can be the very factor that prevents a major breakdown with all the hurt and waste that involves.
The Bishop has, therefore, made arrangements for the provision of a confidential Diocesan Counselling Service.
To encourage and affirm the use of this service the Bishop is contributing a subsidy towards the cost of the fees.
About Counselling
Counselling can be of particular help
- When we feel anxious or low
- When it is hard to stop or relax
- When we experience high levels of stress, or the opposite - loss of energy and motivation; either of which can be accompanied by:
- loss of interest in key aspects of life and relationships
- loss of direction and aridity in our spiritual life
- powerful and overwhelming feelings or loss of emotion and a rising sense of disconnectedness
- difficulties managing at work and/or at home
- When we need to grow more as a person - emotionally, psychologically, spiritually; to deepen our understanding and feelings in relationship to ourselves and others.
Counselling is a confidential professional relationship which offers you an opportunity to talk about and explore personal and work-related issues in a private, safe and relaxed setting with a qualified and experienced person who has no other role in your life. You will not be judged or criticised for the issues you bring, nor the feelings or thoughts that come with them, but welcomed and respected.
Friends and family are an important source of care, affection and support, but sometimes we can feel the need for more structured and neutral help apart from that available from family and friends.
Counsellors are trained to listen and help you explore what is happening in your life, and to enable you to come to your own decisions about what you want or need to do.
The service is completely confidential, including the identities of those using the service.
All the counsellors who work for our service are fully trained and registered with either the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) or the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and are bound by the Codes of Ethics and Practice of those national organisations.
