Bishop Steven has just seen the publication of another Lent series, “Experiencing God’s Love” aimed at individuals or groups who want to study throughout the season of Lent.

‘The Lord’s Prayer’: 5 evenings exploring how to pray

The evenings held in Sheffield Cathedral with Bishop Steven will take place on 5 consecutive Wednesdays; 29 February and the 7, 14, 21, 28 March all at 7.30pm.

The evenings held at Doncaster Minster (all on the same dates and times) will be with Bishop  Peter. The sessions are suitable for all who want to learn more about their faith but especially those who are exploring Christian faith and preparing for baptism and confirmation. 



Diocesan Synod date

The next meeting of the Diocesan Synod will be held at the Elim Christian Centre, Effingham Street, Rotherham, on Saturday 25 February 2012 (9am). There is an important issue on the Agenda for this Synod, in particular, the referral by General Synod of a motion on the Anglican Communion Covenant to Diocesan Synods.The Diocesan Synod Agenda Committee meets on the 31 January and will present the Agenda to the Bishop’s Council’s meeting later that day to agree the arrangements for the Synod’s meeting.

We will be running another training day to equip dioceses, deaneries and parishes to use the Worship4Today material on Tuesday 7 February (10am-4pm) at St Mary’s Church, Bramall Lane, Sheffield. The cost is £20pp including a buffet lunch and coffee upon arrival. A full programme will be sent out nearer the time. The training day will include guidance on setting up the course from scratch, running of individual sessions and establishing appropriate methods of evaluation and review. Copies of Worship4Today will be on sale at both events. Whirlow Grange Spirituality Centre – Featured Event

Saturday 28 January – Revd David Jeans, Leadership Development Officer for Ecclesfield deanery will be exploring the reasons why shared leadership in the church is a form of leadership to be welcomed as resonating with the Christian faith. Co-hosted with Revd Philip Roderick, the Chaplain at Whirlow Grange and Bishop’s Adviser in Spirituality this is a day for all leaders, clergy and lay, but will be particularly useful if clergy/lay leaders for the same parish are able to attend. The cost of the day is £21 per person and includes lunch. The day begins at 10am and finishes at approx. 4pm.

Resources Centre, Church House, Rotherham

New In the Resources we have copies of Bishop Steven’s new publications:  ‘Experiencing God’s Love’ (£5.99) and ‘How to live: A Guide to the Christian Journey’ (Joint author Stephen Cottrell) (£9.99). These are available to be purchased from our bookstall or borrowed from the Resources Centre. We also have a few 2012 Lectionaries available to be purchased at the reduced price of £4. If you are making a specific journey to the Centre please ring first as there will be several unstaffed /closed days over the next few weeks and we would not like anyone to have a wasted journey. Meadowhall Quiet Room

Meadowhall have opened a Quiet Room for those visiting the shopping complex. It is situated in the Management suite on the ground floor at the back of the Oasis Food Hall (recently refurbished). It is indicated on the board maps, overhead signs and customer leaflets.  It is stressed that it is a Quiet Room and not a Prayer Room, but people are welcome to use it for private prayer and meditation if they so wish. Users sign in at the Reception Desk and the room is then unlocked. Mobile phones, food and drink are not allowed. If you have any comments about it, please let me know in writing, and if appropriate I will pass them on to the management. WaterAid’s Lent Appeal

The charity WaterAid is asking congregations across the country to collect Jars of Change for jars of water this Lent. By asking everyone to give something up and donating what they save, your church could help families like Musabyimana’s from Rwanda whose family has never had safe water. Using technologies like rainwater harvesting, we hope to bring a safe supply of water to 2,000 people in Rwanda. There are lots of free Lent resources to get your church involved including posters, presentations and Sunday school resources. Please visit today and get your church involved this Lent.



Magnificent Schulze Organ is back in use!

The monthly Organ recitals will begin again at Doncaster Minster in January 2012, they will take place on the 4th Friday of the month beginning at 1.10pm, lasting approx. 50 minutes. ‘Palestine, the Bible and the Imperial Imagination’

A Public Lecture by Professor Keith Whitelam at Quaker Meeting House 10 St James Street, Sheffield, S1 2EW on Wednesday 8 February (7.30pm). Professor Whitelam is the author of The Invention ofAncient Israel, the Silencing of Palestinian History and has recently retired from the chair of Biblical Studies at Sheffield University. He has published a number of studies challenging the view that the Old Testament can be interpreted as a straightforward historical account of the events its describes.

There are a number of places available on the Evangelism into the Future module at the School of Ministry in the Spring term. This module looks at historic, contemporary and emerging approaches to Christian evangelism, with reference to placement experiences. Discipleship Course

"Foundations of Faith" is a discipleship course, taught as a rolling programme across the Diocese, in three terms of eight evenings. It perhaps offers more than most parishes can normally provide, but is much less demanding than, for example, the School of Ministry. Part One covers; Worship, Using the Bible, Christian Ethics and Church History. Going for Growth

Preaching Paul

On Saturday 24 March 2012 (10am-4pm, arrive 9.30am for coffee) a day conference with Professor James Dunn. Professor Dunn is a leading New Testament scholar and expert on Pauline theology, having researched and written widely in this area. Steve and Heather Wilcockson have now moved into the Archdeacon’s House in Doncaster.  Please give them the warmest of welcomes to a new town and Diocese and Steve to his new role.  Steve will be licensed and collated on Wednesday, 25 January at 7.30 pm in the Cathedral.  Please feel free to contact Steve on Archdeacon’s business after 25 January. Prior to that date any urgent Archdeacon’s business should be directed to the Archdeacon of Sheffield and Rotherham.

Peter and Jane Burrows will be moving to the new Bishop of Doncaster’s house in Fishlake on 16 and 17 January.  Again please make them very welcome.  Peter will begin normal work as Bishop of Doncaster following his consecration on Thursday, 2 February in York Minster. 


Peter has already appointed his new secretary, Dominique Horsfield, and Dominique will take up her post around 10 February.
