“Do not underestimate Christmas” – Bishop Steven
Last Updated on Tuesday, 18 January 2011 08:28
The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, warns against underestimating the message and meaning of Christmas in his Midnight Mass Christmas Sermon at Sheffield Cathedral (24th/25th December 2010).
Dr Croft insists, throughout the address, that “Everyone, except the very wise, underestimates at Christmas.”
The power and significance of the birth of Jesus are seen in the life, teaching death and resurrection of someone “whose stories are told all over the world “ and who “provides the way for all people everywhere to be forgiven, to be reconciled to God, to begin again”.

Diocesan Development Day 2010
Last Updated on Monday, 04 October 2010 14:03
Hundreds of parish representatives from across South Yorkshire and parts o
f the East Riding gathered in Sheffield on Saturday 2 October for the Sheffield Diocesan 2010 Development Day focusing on Fresh Expressions of Church (www.freshexpressions.org.uk).
"We gather together to reflect on God's mission and our part in it," the Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, told clergy and laity.
There was worship, lots of workshops and set piece addresses including one from the archbishops' missioner and leader of the Fresh Expressions team, Graham Cray.
"I am hoping that a whole range of parishes will grasp the enormous challenge of engaging in all forms of traditional ministry as well as the possibility of engaging with fresh expressions." Bishop Cray told delegates.
He added:" I will be looking at the nature and scale of the mission field; the fact that one size does not fit all; and at some of the core principles of how we put these into action."
Dr Croft, who held Bishop Cray's position before becoming Bishop of Sheffield said: "To fulfill that vision and be the church for the 1.2 million people who live in our diocese, we need to grow our existing churches. And we need to begin new ones. So that there will be all kinds of churches in all kinds of networks and places as part of one diocesan family."
Those attending will report back to their parishes on all that they have seen and heard.
The Diocese of Sheffield is called to grow a sustainable network of Christ-like, lively and diverse Christian communities in every place which are effective in making disciples and in seeking to transform our society and God’s world.
