Mike North and Jon Buckley are pleased to announce the launch of a brand new ecumenical youth ministry training course, coming soon to South Yorkshire... AURORA YOUTH. The Bishop's Certificate in Youth Ministry.
This course has been designed to meet the needs of volunteer youth leaders with busy lives. It is ideal for people who have no formal youth work qualifications but want to improve their skills and understanding and be more effective in God's mission to the young people in their community. It will help deliver the diocesan vision of building sustainable, lively and diverse communities, by helping youth leaders to make disciples who seek transformation in their world.
This year-long course will provide all the essential skills, knowledge and understanding needed to be effective in youth ministry, and will cover: Youth Work and Ministry, The youth worker, Understand young people, Managing the ministry and Approaches to youth ministry practice. It will help students understand the changing cultures in society and explore various methodologies of mission and pioneering ministry.
We are excited that this course is comparable to many similar accredited courses, but without the extra costs that accreditation brings. Other courses of this nature charge around £650 per student. We will be charging an introductory rate of £100 per student for the first year, increasing in the second year. We are also in the process of seeking validation through Cliff College.
The course will start this September and the teaching schedule will include three Saturdays (one per term) and monthly Wednesday evenings (7-9.30pm). The course will run out of Church House in Rotherham for 2013-2014. In addition to these face to face training sessions, students will be required to partake in weekly online learning tasks (approx 1 hour each week completed at the students' convenience.)
Students will compile a portfolio of evidence throughout the year which will be assessed. Those following the requirements throughout the year will receive the Bishop's Certificate in Youth Ministry, including the Bishop's authorisation (if placed in the Anglican setting.) Students will need to get the backing of their local church / organisation, and ensure that suitable support and management structures are in place before the commencement of the course. Students should be involved in at least one regular youth group per week. It is hoped that churches or organisations will either fully fund the students, or at least part fund them.
The teaching and running of the course will be managed by Mike North (Director of Youth Ministries for Sheffield Diocese) and Jon Buckley (Ecunite Manager for YMCA White Rose). Other experienced / qualified local youth ministers across south Yorkshire will also contribute to the teaching sessions and support of the course. If you are aged 16 or older, involved in any Christian youth work setting, you are welcome to apply.
