Diocese of Sheffield receives grant funding for pioneering ministries
Today it has been announced that the Church Commissioners are giving a grant of £100,000 to the Diocese of Sheffield. This grant will allow the Diocese to place people who are training for pioneer ordination in deprived parishes across the area.
There are many ways to train for ordination and context-based training is becoming more popular, here the training ministers are placed in a church part-time as a key part of their training. This is particularly effective when training pioneer ministers, whose role is to reach far beyond church walls to those who have no understanding of the Christian faith.
The grant means that pioneer ministers who are training for ordination in the Diocese of Sheffield will be able to be placed in some of the poorest areas of the region, working alongside local churches developing new projects as part of their training. A large part of this grant will go directly towards bursaries so that pioneers can work with churches who could not otherwise afford this type of resource.
This will help to share resources across the Diocese as pioneers who have been part of larger churches take their experience and enthusiasm into less-resourced parishes. It will also keep pioneer ministers in the north where previously they have often moved away to train.
Part of the grant will also be used to help establish context based training in the region in association with the Yorkshire Ministry Course.
