Lay Ministry Service

32 adults were admitted or authorised to work as ‘Lay Ministers’ across the Diocese of Sheffield by the Bishop of Doncaster, Peter Burrows, on Saturday 22 September in a special service at Sheffield Cathedral.
They join a group of over 400 such volunteers working with the clergy and another 75 in training at the Sheffield School of Ministry.
They offer their time and skills to enable the Church to worship and serve throughout the regions of South Yorkshire and the East Riding.
Bishop Burrows also authorised a new warden and assistant warden of Pastoral Workers and their predecessors, Dr Angie Lauener and Mrs Stella Rose, were thanked for their many years of service in those posts.
Director of Ministry in the Diocese of Sheffield, Canon John Thomson, said: “They are a remarkable bunch of people who come from a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences.”
He added: “Having shared between one and three years of training together, they learn not only how to undertake their roles, but also how to work with each other as part of the Diocesan Ministry Team.”
The Celebration of Lay Ministries Service, which takes place once a year, sees friends, family and parishes supporting their candidates.
