Our Aim:

IME 4-7 work aims to support the ongoing Initial Ministerial Education of curates, so that, as reflective and effective practitioners, the may achieve the necessary levels of development according to the Church of England’s Agreed Learning Outcomes for Ordained Ministry and be ready to undertake a position of responsibility or an ongoing supporting role by the end of the IME period.
Objectives:
1. To support the learning of curates through relevant and engaging training events, employing a primarily reflective approach, in the IME 4-7 programme.
2. To support the learning of curates through the supervision they receive from their training incumbents, and by supporting the whole process through which curates and incumbents work together.
3. To facilitate the integration of theological learning and ministerial experience pre and post ordination (IME 1-3 and IME 4-7) and the ongoing integration of theory, practice and self-awareness in ministry.
4. To work in full partnership with the dioceses in the formation, support and assessment of clergy in the IME 4-7 stage of training.

The IME Development and Training Programme

The Sheffield Diocese approaches the task of initial ministerial education in three areas.  These areas are designed to offer training, support and formation for your ministerial development.

Three areas are:

IME CIRCLES

1. Training Parish and Incumbent

The experience gained in your training parish and relationship with your training incumbent are of primary importance over the next few years.  The relationship between the curate and training minister is both personal and professional.  It is recognised as the most important element of your training post.  For some of you it will have meant moving into a new community, new home and new surroundings.

2. Diocesan Initial Ministerial Education Programme

The next dimension to your training is via the Diocesan IME Programme.  Our aim is to complement and enrich all that you are learning in your training parish or local context.

2.1. IME Mentor Groups

All Curates share in an IME Mentor Group.  Curates in Year 4 meet together with the Deacons’ Mentor and years 5, 6, 7 meet in one of two Mentor Groups.  Details of the Mentors are found in the ‘Meet the Team’ section.  The groups meet every 4-6 weeks.  There is no fixed agenda for these groups but they provide support and encouragements as you continue to develop in skill and experience.  Mentor groups are a place in which we hope you will be able to reflect with others on your experience and practice in the parish.

2.2. IME Training Days and Residential Conference

You will find a list of dates and venues for the training days in Appendix C Please put the dates in your diary
The IME programme takes priority over parish based events.
In the eventuality of assistant curates experiencing difficulties or problems in attending IME events they must make contact with the Director of IME.
With regard to Self Supporting Ministers (SSM’s) and Pioneer Ministers (OPM’s) the IME Dept acknowledge the need for flexibility and negotiation in meeting the requirements of the IME programme. The Director of IME will meet with each SSM and OPM to discuss the programme to negotiate attendance and identify areas of support to enable the completion of IME requirements.

3. Yorkshire Regional Training Partnership (RTP)

The Yorkshire Regional Training Partnership is made up of the Dioceses of Sheffield, York, Bradford, Wakefield and Ripon-Leeds, plus the theological colleges of Mirfield (College of the Resurrection – CoR) and the Yorkshire Ministry Course (YMC).
The Dioceses are partnering in the reflective theological component of curate training by providing 2 modules which curates will be required to undertake during IME 5 & 6.
In addition, there is a single teaching day for all curates in their deacon year (IME 4) from the foundation module of the YMC course, which is on principles of the theological reflection.  There is the possibility of taking the rest of the course module during your deacon year (or later) should you wish to gain extra academic qualifications.
