QI Reports and appointing a new architect
Last Updated on Wednesday, 07 November 2012 10:55
Appointing the right architect and/or surveyor for your church and establishing a good working relationship with them is a key feature of ensuring your building is kept in good repair. They are also there to help you explore the best ways to use your building and how it may be developed for new uses. The key tool in caring for your church building is the Quinquennial Inspection report (QI). This is where your architect or surveyor provides a detailed written survey of the church and lists in order of urgency any work that is required to keep it in good order. Advice regarding general maintenance can also be provided by your architect and s/he should be the first point of contact when any work is being considered.
The Chancellor has itemised the minor works that can be carried out by the church without the need for a faculty and most of these do not require the input of an architect. The Chancellor's list of minor works, formerly known as the de minimus list can be found below. All other work will require a faculty. Evidence of consultation with your architect iwill normally be required.
Each diocese has a list of approved architects and surveyors which churches can approach to appoint as their QI inspector. This list is currently being updated and will be available by the end of the year ion this section as a downloadable document. It is important that both the church and the architect know what to expect from the QI report. The following documents are intended as guidance for churches and architects during the appointment process and indicate what to expect from a QI report. Note that practices and churches will have their own expectations and routines so variations will occur in the order of presentation.
Below is the application form and associated papers for architects and surveyors who wish to be included on the new Approved list of Architects and Surveyors for the Diocese of Sheffield 2013-2017.
