I operate in the role of Anglican chaplain, working with over 25,000 students and 5,500 staff. On a rotating basis the role of coordinating chaplain for the Multifaith Chaplaincy falls to me once every three years. The Christian team consists of 3 full time chaplains (Methodist, RC and Anglican), 1 part-time associate URC chaplain, 1 voluntary Orthodox associate chaplain and 3 student workers (two of whom are also employed by the Diocese of Sheffield, see below). There is a wider team of ten or more religious advisers drawn from the world religions, paganism and further Christian denominations.
There is a collective focus on facilitating the place of religion in the public, research, teaching and learning life of the University. The Christian team gives a particular focus to Christian mission, ministry, worship and pastoral care. The specific Anglican chaplaincy contribution to the Christian team is funded via an Anglican Chaplaincy Trust, the Diocese of Sheffield and with support from the Sheffield Church Burgesses Trust. A Student Development Worker and a Student Outreach Worker are employed to work alongside the Anglican Chaplain. The particular additional focus to the work of the team for the next four years provided by the Anglican chaplaincy is to support the spiritual maturation of the many students and staff at the university who are aware of their spirituality but are not sure how to express or develop it.

Philip Roderick an Anglican priest, percussionist, educator and author. Philip works part-time as Bishop Steven Croft’s Adviser in Spirituality and Chaplain to Whirlow Grange, Sheffield. He is committed to the discernment and encouragement of spiritual gifts, with a particular personal interest providing resource for those involved in the healing ministry, in teaching at all levels and in the creative arts. Through the work of Whirlow Grange Spirituality Centre he is involved in the provision of retreats, workshops, themed and simple quiet days and the formation and support of spiritual accompaniers or directors.
In 1992 Philip founded and still directs The Quiet Garden Movement, a simple ministry of hospitality and prayer in over 300 homes and centres across the world (www.quietgarden.co.uk). He is the founder and Community Leader of Contemplative Fire, an extended community and network fresh expression of church now taking shape in different regions (www.contemplativefire.org). “Hidden Houses of Prayer” is a new initiative, a partnership project , which arises directly from the different ingredients of Philip’s work.
'Beloved: Henry Nouwen in conversation', Philip’s book and CD, is published by Canterbury Press. He is contributor to “Evaluating Fresh Expressions: Explorations in Emerging Church” and “Ancient Faith, Future Mission: Fresh Expressions in the Sacramental Tradition”, both also published by Canterbury Press. His CD “Sheer Sound” features the unusual and ambient Hang Drum and his DVD 'Sacred Posture' teaches different body prayers rooted in the Way of Christ.

I work with healthcare professionals and ministers of religion in GP Practices in Sheffield to provide ‘whole person healthcare’ .
Prior to training as a Church Army Evangelist, I spent twenty years working as a registered nurse in the NHS. My desire is to share the Gospel with those who have little or no contact with church or Christians. In Sheffield, 99% of the population go to their GP seeking help with their physical, mental, spiritual and relationship problems compared to 6% who go to their local church.
My ministry has developed over the last three years and is now based in three GP practices. Patients come to see me with a range of issues such as, chronic health problems, depression, abuse, bereavement, miscarriage, paranormal activity, relationship problems and alcoholism, to name just a few. I have taken funerals and memorial services for former patients or their families. I also work alongside local churches, linking patients into their bereavement groups, luncheon clubs, pastoral visits and Alpha groups etc.

I am a part-time Chaplain with Sheffield Health and Social Care Foundation Trust.
Since ordination I have worked in a couple of parishes before entering mental health chaplaincy in 2004. I am based at the Michael Carlisle Centre, the psychiatric hospital in Nether Edge, and spend some time working with people at our Forensic Unit where people have spent some time in prison. I meet with patients on a one-to-one basis and also work closely with our chaplaincy volunteers, leading Sunday services and weekly discussion groups.
There are five of us within the Chaplaincy and Spiritual Care Department:
- Julian Raffay, team leader
- David Middleton, who works with people with learning disabilities
- Sheila Kennedy, Roman Catholic
- Sabia Rehman, Musli.
We all work with people of any faith or no faith, helping them to reflect on their lives and on what gives them hope and strength. We are happy to be contacted for advice or consultation, or to speak about mental health at church services or meetings. We also welcome people who would be interested in working with us as volunteers.

My name is Reverend Charles Thody and I am the Head of Chaplaincy for the Rotherham, Doncaster and South Humber NHS Mental Health Foundation Trust (RDaSH). I have been a Mental Health Chaplain for 10 years, much of that time as Manager of a multi faith Chaplaincy Team for Rampton High Secure Hospital. I joined RDaSH in September 2009.
My responsibilities are to manage and develop the Chaplaincy Team for the care of those who suffer from the many forms of mental illness in the large area that we cover (currently spanning three dioceses, as we provide services in Manchester, South Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire!)
Our team is small but expanding and I am currently developing the multi-faith aspect of our work as we serve a large and culturally diverse population. I am very happy to become involved in diocesan events and give talks on the works of Mental Health Chaplains to many and varied groups.
