Heather Morris reports:
The Leadership Conference held yesterday at Sheffield Cathedral was attended by over 50 headteachers, governors and colleagues from the Diocesan Board of Education representing 23 of the church schools across the Diocese.
Presentations from Bishop Steven, Liz Hallet – Headteacher at Hatfield Travis CE Infant & Nursery School, Doncaster, Gail Atkin – Headteacher at Wickersley St Alban CE Primary School, Rotherham and Jean Horner – Chair of Governors at Hemingfield The Ellis CE Primary School, Barnsley were well received and gave much food for thought. An opportunity was available for colleagues to reflect on what it is to lead a church school at this time in the 21st century.
During the Cathedral lunchtime Eucharist, Director of Education Heather Morris, Headteachers and Senior Leaders in schools, Governors and all those in leadership roles in the Diocese, were commissioned by Bishop Steven to use their gifts to fulfil their roles of providing the highest standard of education inspired by Christian faith and values.
Thanks to all who participated in this important event for education in the Diocese of Sheffield

The General Synod's Revision Committee considering the draft legislation on enabling women to become bishops has completed the first phase of its work. After receiving nearly 300 submissions, many offering alternatives to the proposal, the Committee has voted to amend the draft Measure to provide for certain functions to be vested in bishops by statute rather than by delegation from the diocesan bishop. The process of enabling women bishops still has a number of years to run. It will be open to the full Synod before being considered at Parliament and eventually for Royal Assent. If accepted, the first female bishop could be consecrated by 2014.

Costa Coffee has agreed that all their shops can host a regular Christian presentation, set up through cafechurch.net by local churches. Several churches are taking turns to provide basic accommodation during this period and now we need a pool of volunteers willing to help on either a regular or a one-off basis, from 9.30 p.m. to 7.30 a.m., on various nights. We will require a minimum of three volunteer helpers each night to make hot drinks, provide a listening ear if requested and possibly even get some sleep (!), in addition to drivers to convey guests to and from the city centre. Training will be provided. Please contact Ruth Grayson (tel. 230 5171 / 07899 044853 or email assocsave@onetel.com) for further information.
You are invited to join this pilgrimage, which has been devised by the Sheffield branch of Church Action on Poverty to include places notable in the struggle against poverty and to provide some spectacular views. Pilgrims can seek sponsorship for the pilgrimage, with proceeds going to help to homeless people and the work of Church Action on Poverty.
The Pilgrimage is approximately 5 miles long and will start at 9.30am on Saturday 17 October at the cathedral where there will be a short service.
