A new £50m Lottery-funded grant programme called Community Spaces was launched last week. The Community Spaces programme will provide grants and support to community groups wanting to make their neighbourhoods cleaner and greener. Community Spaces will help local people improve and create play areas, community gardens, parks, wildlife areas, ponds, courts, village greens and churchyards. Community Spaces is funded through the Big Lottery Fund and will make grants of between £10,000 and £49,999 and some limited grants of up to £450,000. The small and medium grants will be available until January 2011. Applications for the large and flagship grants will be open from summer 2008. In 2009 we are proposing to run the course “Foundations of Faith” in Sheffield, Rotherham, and Doncaster. It is a 14 evening course, with 2 evenings each on:
“Foundations of Faith” is not an academic course as such, and should be helpful for many church members, as well as those specifically exploring some form of vocation. We will need to charge £25 per participant to cover costs – though it may be that this could be covered by a participant’s parish.

On Wednesday 30th April at 2.00pm in Doncaster Minster, Clive Howarth, will be giving an illustrated talk on “The Great Fire of Doncaster, 1853”. The talk is one of a series of talks at the Minster, which forms part of the Jubilee Celebrations to mark the 150th Anniversary of the present building. The talk will take a look at mid-19th Century Doncaster and the events surrounding the calamitous fire of February 1853, which destroyed the ancient St. George's Church. The destruction of St. George’s Church was described by one eye witness as ‘“The impression created by the first sight of this sad scene was that of paralysing hopelessness. A single glance sufficed to show that the destruction of the sacred pile was inevitable. Dismay was written on the countenance of each spectator”.
