REPORT FROM SYNOD

From our special correspondent, Ian Downing: Elim Church, Rotherham   Synod began with prayers and worship led by lay chair of Rotherham, Peter Rainford. The Bishop in his Presidential address talked of the importance of Thanksgiving in Intercessions and thanked 3 people who have been very important in the last 10 years and are all retiring from their positions: Miranda Myers, Registrar; Revd Patricia Impey, as Dean of Women’s Ministry; and Canon John Biggin, Chairman of the Diocesan Board of Finance.

There was a full report from Revd Mike Wagstaff, Social Responsibility Officer, and Revd Lydia Wells on the work of the Faith and Justice Committee and of the Social Responsibility Officer’s job specification. They told of all the important work of the committee. A replacement is being looked for Mike.

The Bishop of Doncaster thanked Bishop Jack for his ministry. We were then introduced to the new Director of Education Miss Heather Morris. There was a report of the Prison Service and his own work by Rev Philip Ireson, Chaplain to HMP Doncaster. His report highlighted the overcrowding of prisons, increase in suicides and that the UK has highest prison population of Europe. He suggested there was a problem with length of detention, caused by media pressure. Many prisoners prefer prison to community service as they get free meals and free health checks.   Canon John Biggin praised the Diocese for the high level of Parish Share which meant that there was not a loss this year.

An excellent Synod all round!

(The Bishop’s Presidential Address is now up on the website: http://sheffield.anglican.org

CONGRATULATIONS!

To Archdeacon Bob Fitzharris who today is given Doncaster’s top honour!

Six local people are to be given Doncaster’s top honour by receiving the Freedom of the Borough from Mayor Martin Winter and Chair of Council, Councillor Tony Sockett on Tuesday 19 February 2008.   The six people to receive this very special honour from Doncaster Council are; The Venerable Robert Fitzharris, Tommy Joyce MBE, Dorothy Layton, Dennis Rollins, Tony Storey OBE and Roger Tuby who will be presented with their Freedom scroll.

Mayor Martin Winter said: "It is fantastic that we are honouring our local champions and recognising the remarkable work they have done over the years. They have all made major contributions to Doncaster and its people, for this I cannot speak highly enough of them. I look forward to congratulating them and presenting them with this high honour."

Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour that is given out by any local authority and the six will join those conferred in 2000, the last time the award was given out.

SHEFFIELD PARISH HITS TV

As Seen On TV - On Friday 22nd of February at 7.30pm on BBC 1's 'Inside Out'.

ALL SAINTS DARFIELD WRITE: All Saints Church, Darfield and our Rector Neil (great face for Radio!), are to be featured on the new series of the BBC programme 'Inside Out' on Friday 22nd February. It was filmed in early January on a very west day indeed, and took around 3 hours to complete. We had a huge lifting platform parked in the rectory for some overhead shots, and Neil had to repeat himself over and over again, whilst they filmed from a different angle. The programme will be looking at the recent lead thefts and the deterrents people have employed."

SPACE NEEDED: SHEFFIELD YOUTH THEATRE

The Sheffield Youth Theatre will CLOSE after 30 years of activity if a new space cannot be secured for rehearsal and costume storage. The group’s newest play, “The New Day”, has been written in part to highlight their plight, and there are performances coming up which may be viewed to understand the group’s work, which seeks to teach youths skills and respect for themselves and others.

If you can help with space, PLEASE contact: Alan Padmore, Space Co-Ordinator, at 07926 083272!

WALK THROUGH HOLY WEEK

St Polycarp’s Malin Bridge, Sheffield is running an event in church for Y5/6 from four local schools, some 250 children in all. It was inspired by an article in the Church Army Magazine about a similar event in Aberdeen and the church is doing it instead of our usual holiday club. “Walk through Holy Week” will be a 2-hour session in church telling the story of the events of Easter. It will involve interactive drama, song, audiovisual input and crafts.

SPIRITUALITY AND DOCTOR WHO

An exploration of spirituality through Doctor Who

SATURDAY 19TH APRIL 2008 @ 10am – 4pm

Wilson Carlile Campus, Sheffield

Why is the new version of Doctor Who such a huge success, with ratings going through the roof, regular Christmas specials and episodes commissioned up to 2010? Is it the strength of the acting and writing? The state-of-the-art special effects? The family appeal? The monsters and sense of imagination? Yes, it is all of these things. But maybe the series is also touching people’s need for - and understanding of - myth and spirituality. Confirmed speakers include Barry Letts, producer of Who’s “Golden Era” in the early 70s. The cost for attending the day, which includes lunch, is £25. To book, please contact Wendy Evans at Wilson Carlile Campus, 50 Cavendish Street, Sheffield S3 7RZ, email w.evans@churcharmy.org.uk, telephone number: 0114 278 7020

He found faith and deliverance in Jesus and after training as a counsellor Grant now helps others who are themselves suffering from addictions to alcohol, drugs, etc. For further information please contact Rev Peter Allen mobile 07882131370, email prallen3@yahoo.co.uk or view ONSIDE website http://www.onsideevents.co.uk/
