THE WEEK AHEAD

This week, the Church remembers: Julian of Norwich on Thursday (8th)

Sunday is the Feast of Pentecost.

Breathe in me, O Holy Spirit, that my thoughts may all be holy.

Act in me, O Holy Spirit, that my work, too, may be holy.

Draw my heart, O Holy Spirit, that I love but what is holy.

Strengthen me, O Holy Spirit, to defend all that is holy.

Guard me, then, O Holy Spirit, that I always may be holy.

Amen.

BOOK CHOICE

Liberating Texts?

Sacred Scriptures in Public Life SPCK 2008 £12.99

This is a slightly frustrating book. Although it is readable and full of good ideas it never really gets there. David F Ford’s work on sacred texts in public life is five pages too long but contains some good material. Ataullah Siddiqui helps the Christian reader understand current thoughts about the sacred nature of Islamic Scriptures. John Senatmu provides a chapter entitled Uncovering the Purposes of God without clearly rooting his polemic in the interpretation of sacred texts. Shirely Williams lifts the latter part of the book with a look at the liberal political agenda in the 21st century. Read it on the train!

DEBT COUNSELLING

The Church of England has launched various campaigns and activities recently designed to help those who find themselves in debt.  The national ‘Matter of Life and Debt’ campaign launched in January 2008, offers common sense advice and resources to householders to make the best sense of the amount of debt that they are in.  The resources and information can be found on the ‘Matter of Life and Debt’ pages of the Church of England website at www.cofe.anglican.org/debt.

The Diocese is concerned about the level of debt in the community as a whole but is also concerned to provide support and advice to clergy who find themselves in financial difficulty.  To that end, it has set up a confidential free service with a qualified Accountant.  Mr David Welch is based in Rotherham and can be contacted on 01709 378552.  His role is to provide guidance on how to avoid and manage financial debt.  Any clergyperson, or their family, living in the Diocese can take advantage of his advice.  It should be emphasised that it is a confidential service and names will not be divulged to diocesan staff or officials.
