From our special correspondent, Ian Downing: Elim Church, Rotherham Synod began with prayers and worship led by lay chair of Rotherham, Peter Rainford. The Bishop in his Presidential address talked of the importance of Thanksgiving in Intercessions and thanked 3 people who have been very important in the last 10 years and are all retiring from their positions: Miranda Myers, Registrar; Revd Patricia Impey, as Dean of Women’s Ministry; and Canon John Biggin, Chairman of the Diocesan Board of Finance.
There was a full report from Revd Mike Wagstaff, Social Responsibility Officer, and Revd Lydia Wells on the work of the Faith and Justice Committee and of the Social Responsibility Officer’s job specification. They told of all the important work of the committee. A replacement is being looked for Mike.
The Bishop of Doncaster thanked Bishop Jack for his ministry. We were then introduced to the new Director of Education Miss Heather Morris. There was a report of the Prison Service and his own work by Rev Philip Ireson, Chaplain to HMP Doncaster. His report highlighted the overcrowding of prisons, increase in suicides and that the UK has highest prison population of Europe. He suggested there was a problem with length of detention, caused by media pressure. Many prisoners prefer prison to community service as they get free meals and free health checks. Canon John Biggin praised the Diocese for the high level of Parish Share which meant that there was not a loss this year.
An excellent Synod all round!
(The Bishop’s Presidential Address is now up on the website: http://sheffield.anglican.org

Freedom of the Borough is the highest honour that is given out by any local authority and the six will join those conferred in 2000, the last time the award was given out.

ALL SAINTS DARFIELD WRITE: All Saints Church, Darfield and our Rector Neil (great face for Radio!), are to be featured on the new series of the BBC programme 'Inside Out' on Friday 22nd February. It was filmed in early January on a very west day indeed, and took around 3 hours to complete. We had a huge lifting platform parked in the rectory for some overhead shots, and Neil had to repeat himself over and over again, whilst they filmed from a different angle. The programme will be looking at the recent lead thefts and the deterrents people have employed."

Grant Sharp is a Sheffield man (not from the world of sport) who has a very encouraging down to earth story to tell of how when he was in the grip of alcohol and drug addiction was sought out by God and through a series of 'divine appointments' including a Benny Hill Angel, an ex 'bag lady' cum Christian sister, and a priest in Malta. He found faith and deliverance in Jesus and after training as a counsellor Grant now helps others who are themselves suffering from addictions to alcohol, drugs, etc. For further information please contact Rev Peter Allen mobile 07882131370, email prallen3@yahoo.co.uk or view ONSIDE website http://www.onsideevents.co.uk/
