THE WEEK AHEAD

This week, the Church remembers: the birth of John the Baptist today; Cyril, Bishop of Alexandria, teacher (444) on Friday 27th June 2008; Irenaeus, Bishop of Lyons, teacher (c. 200) on Saturday 28th; Peter and Paul the Apostles, on Monday 30th.

This Sunday is the Sixth Sunday after Trinity.

ARCHBISHOP OF BRAZIL IN THE DIOCESE

The Archbishop of Brazil, the Most Revd Maurico Andrade, will be visiting the Diocese of Sheffield between the 28th and 30th June. The Archbishop, who leads the  Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil (the Anglican Church of Brazil), will be undertaking a number of different activities in order to build international ties.On Sunday 29th, the Archbishop will be presiding at a service at St James and St Christopher’s Church, Shiregreen . Afterwards, he will join the parishioners  for a barbecue lunch.

On Monday, he will be visiting the Sheffield Cathedral’s Archer Project, before meeting the Lord Mayor of Sheffield, Councillor Mrs Jane Bird and rounding off the trip by visiting the Community of the Resurrection at Mirfield. “We’re all delighted that Archbishop Mauricio will be coming to visit us here in Shiregreen”, said the Revd Anesia Nascimento-Cook.  “It’s a wonderful way of showing that Shiregreen is very much a part of the world-wide Anglican Communion, as is every parish in this Diocese.”  The Diocese of Sheffield retains many other international links, mostly especially with the Church in Argentina.

 

Notes

The Province of Brazil, which is one of the few Portuguese speaking churches in the Communion, became autonomous in 1965.There are 10 Dioceses in the Province of Brazil:  Amazon;  Brasilia;  Curitiba;  Missionary District of Oeste-Brasil;  Pelotas;  Recife;  Rio de Janeiro;  Sao Paulo;  South Western Brazil;  Southern Brazil.  Archbishop Mauricio is undertaking a number of engagements in the weeks leading up to the Lambeth Conference on behalf of USPG:  Anglicans in World Mission, one of the Anglican Church’s oldest mission agencies.  Archbishop Mauricio is one of the International Trustees of USPG.

BARNSLEY ACADEMY ART EXHIBITION

As part of 150yrs Anniversary of St Thomas’ church  an Art Exhibition by the students of Barnsley Academy will be held in the   Parish Hall, Bank End Road, Worsbrough Dale on Friday 27th until Monday 30th June. The students have been asked to create art work depicting the church and each piece is designed in the style of artists and art movements from the last 150yrs. Students from age 11 to 19yrs have been involved in the project and have used a wide variety of art materials to produce their work. The exhibition is open Fri/Sat/Mon 10am to 4pm and Sun 11am to 4pm. 

There will be refreshments available .

 

 “CHURCHES AND THEIR SAINTS”  A TALK by DR GRAHAM JONES

As part of St. Thomas Church, Worsbrough Dale, there will be a talk and presentation entitled “Thomas, Luke, Mary and James: Churches and their Saints in the South Yorkshire Coalfield.”

This will be held in St Thomas’ Parish Hall [Bank End Road, Worsbrough Dale] and will start at 7pm.

Dr Graham Jones, author of “Saints in the Landscape”, believes that the choice of a church’s patron saint can teach a lot about the local community, it’s concerns, character and history.

 

DIOCESAN DEVELOPMENT DAY

Diocesan Development Day Saturday 4th October 2008 At  The Cathedral Church of St Peter and St Paul Sheffield Led by the Diocesan  Environment Group

Key Note Speaker:  Revd Dave Bookless Director of A Rocha UK

The 2008 Diocesan Development Day will take the form of a conference to explore issues of creation care and contemporary spirituality within the Church. The main sessions will be led by the Revd Dave Bookless, Director of A Rocha UK and author of the recently published: Planetwise'. PCC REGISTRATION

The Charities Act 2006 requires all parishes with an annual income of £100,000 pa or more to register with the Charity Commission, starting this October. The Diocese of Sheffield is working with the support of the national church as one of two pilot dioceses to help parishes with this process.

A meeting was held on 17th June with those parishes with income known to be above this threshold. Although the procedure is fairly straightforward, there are some important guidance notes which need to be followed if registration is to be successfully achieved.

NO PARISH SHOULD REGISTER WITHOUT SEEKING ADVICE FROM THE DIOCESE.

OCCUPATIONAL PRAYER CYCLE

We ask you to pray this week (25th June - 1st July) for people from the following occupations;- Voluntary workers outside their home country, missionaries.

The Occupational Prayer Cycle, which runs week by week, covers nearly all occupations over the course of the year. It is produced by South Yorkshire Workplace Chaplaincy (SYWC), and more information can be found on their website at http://www.sywc.org.uk/opc/.

People who work for love also need fair treatment.

 

SHEFFIELD NIGHT HIKE

Reflections Retreat
