| Stipendiary Ordained Ministry usually involves exercising incumbency
responsibilities, with oversight of a parish or parishes. A stipend
is paid to allow a priest to do this work without having to seek
for another means of support.
Non-stipendiary Ordained Ministry is often exercised in a parish
context, and sometimes within a wider diocesan context or at
work. An NSM is no less a priest and receives an identical training,
but it is understood that his or her availability is likely to
be more limited.
Both sort so ministers begin their ministries as deacons before
becoming priests, and both serve curacies.
Once a curacy has been served priests may sometimes exercise
their vocation outside a parish context, as chaplains or diocesan
specialists or in some other form of work.
Some go on to take positions in other churches within the Anglican
communion.
