Parish Evangelists’ Newsletter - October 2009
Trish Stafford at Church House and I have tried to create an accurate record of who is an authorised Parish Evangelist. If you have received this in error or know a PE we have overlooked please do let us know as soon as possible.
WHO IS THE WARDEN?
Ian Smith was ordained in the diocese of London after training in London and serving with the Methodist Church in Zimbabwe, he was a parish worker in Wolverhampton. Curacies lasting 7 years in London and Woking followed by 7 years as Vicar in Leyland, Lancashire and then moving to Goole and then North Sheffield.
A MESSAGE FROM BISHOP STEVEN
“We need all kinds of lay ministries in the church of the future but one of the most vital is that of parish evangelists: people who are gifted, trained and set aside to share the good news in all kinds of ways.
Evangelists are by definition very good news. They are often more at home on the edge of church than inside it. They cannot and should not be tamed but need to be set free to share the gospel in the power of the Holy Spirit”.
NEW PARISH EVANGELIST
Ian writes: It was a real pleasure to present Jill Mitchell to Bishop Steven at the celebration of lay ministry at Doncaster Minster. She is serving at Dore. The service was so encouraging and Bishop Steven’s message of offering our whole selves to God very challenging.
THOSE IN TRAINING
Please remember those in training at the moment:
Sonia Blake of Rawmarsh St Mary,
Lynn Deugo of Wincobank St Thomas,
Bill Skipworth of Wadsley,
Sean Howard of St Pauls Masbrough,
Paula Dickson of Doncaster St James.
The (Church Army) Wilson Carlile College of Evangelism will not be in use next year for the school of ministry and the students will be moving to the Cathedral. Please pray for the staff and students as they relocate; for the library, meals and general feel as they adapt to a new location to learn and worship and support one another.
INVITATION
I want to invite you to a meeting of Parish Evangelists on Monday November 16th at 7pm to gather and 7.30 start at St Thomas Church, Newman Road, Wincobank. S9 1LS. There is parking on the road. There will be nice nibbles and drinks on arrival.
This will be a chance to support and encourage one another, for you to see me and I get to know you. I’d like to hear your hopes and stories. I’d like to hear your groans and dreams.
In addition as part of the evening the Rev. Mike Gilbert would like to explore with us how you as Diocese of Sheffield Parish Evangelists might be part of a Mission Order connected to Church Army.
This is an exceptional opportunity to be in the forefront of something new. Will you please let me know if you are coming so we can prepare properly? An email to: Ian.Smith@sheffield.anglican.org or Trish 01709 309147 trish.stafford@sheffield.anglican.org
The Diocesan website
There is no reason why the Parish Evangelists should not have more presence on the website. Is anyone keen on sharing a story, book review, a piece of news about mission and evangelism? Please pass it on and we shall endeavour to get it included as the website is revised and updated. Send material to Trish Stafford 95 – 99 Effingham
Ian asks if anyone is keen on sharing a story, book review, a piece of news about mission and evangelism? Please pass it on.
