The Bishop of Sheffield, Dr Steven Croft, will tell leaders in Christian education in Sheffield Cathedral today that Christian leadership is about looking "outwards and beyond" as he celebrates the involvement of the Church in education
Bishop Croft says that the work of church schools in the Diocese is vitally important and that he has already enjoyed visits to several schools in his first few months as Bishop of Sheffield.
The Bishop also draws on his own experiences as a former head of an Anglican College training men and women for ministry.
Acknowledging that leadership is a massive field with many different subdivisions Dr Croft then asks: "Should a Christian lead in a different way from someone who does not share the Christian faith? Should leadership in a church school be different from leadership in a non-church school?"
The Bishop looks at biblical pointers to understanding leadership and suggests that Christian leaders "should have confidence as Christians in any conversation about leadership that much of what is good in society already is based on a profoundly Christian way of leading and is supported in our tradition..... Many of the ground rules were set generations ago by Christian thinkers and in Christian institutions."
Dr Croft says that Christian leadership stems from the person exercising leadership in the first place stressing that words and actions need to match. It is also about working with people and trying to get the best from them.
He also calls on Christian leadership to be in the business of transformation - ensuring real and positive change takes place - as well as confidently representing the people and institutions which Christian leaders work for within the context of the wider world.
